Ole Miss, MSU, and USM advising windows are ALL happening RIGHT NOW (March 10–April 7). If you don't meet with your advisor, you CAN'T register.

OKAY BULLDOGS, REBELS, AND EAGLES. LISTEN UP.

We are currently in the Summer/Fall 2026 advising window, and if you ignore your advisor's emails, you will show up to registration and see this beautiful message: "You have an advising hold. Please contact your advisor."

Here are the actual dates from your university's registrar so you stop asking "when is advising?":

OLE MISS :

  • Academic Advising (Summer & Fall 2026): March 10 – April 7, 2026. THIS IS NOW.
  • Priority Registration: March 31 – April 14.
  • Winter/Spring 2027 Advising: October 6 – November 3, 2026.
  • The Trap: If you don't get advised in March, you don't register in March/April. Simple as that.
MISSISSIPPI STATE (College of Comm) :
  • Pre-registration advising: Typically a TWO-WEEK period officially scheduled by the university. For Summer/Fall, it's MARCH. For Spring, it's OCTOBER.
  • The Rule: "The only way to be released to register for classes is to attend an advising session. Even if you have a financial hold on your account or are still determining whether you will enroll next semester, you should always plan to attend advising."
  • Alternate PIN: You need this. It's not automatic. Meet with your advisor or you don't get it.
USM (School of Media and Communication) :

  • Summer/Fall Advisement: Late February/Early March (you should have already received an email—if not, CONTACT YOUR ADVISOR).
  • Spring Advisement: Early October.
  • The Form: You fill out an advising form, advisor signs it, you send it to rita.goff@usm.edu, and THEN she lifts the hold. It's not magic.
PRO TIPS FROM THE TRENCHES:
  1. At MSU: Run a Degree Works report in myState BEFORE your appointment. Your advisor will love you. Bring a "backup list" of classes because your first choices might be full .
  2. At Ole Miss: If you're undecided or first-year, the Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience (CSSFYE) has Success Coaches who help with literally everything. Use them .
  3. At USM: If SOAR doesn't show an advisor listed? Email socFREEMississippi immediately. You are not "in the system" yet .
Question for the sub: What's the most creative excuse you've used to get your advisor to meet with you outside of scheduled windows? I need ideas :love::love:.

Last fall I missed the entire advising window because I was "dealing with a family situation" (true) but also just... forgot. When I realized, it was November and all the good classes were gone.

So I emailed my advisor with this:

"I know advising ended weeks ago, but I just discovered a scheduling conflict that completely changes my graduation timeline. I've attached my degree audit and a proposed schedule—if you have 10 minutes this week, I'd be incredibly grateful. If not, I understand and will work with whatever registration is left."

She met with me the next day. Here's why it worked:
  • I took responsibility (didn't blame the system)
  • I came prepared (degree audit + proposed schedule)
  • I made it easy for her (10 minutes, not an hour)
  • I accepted the consequence (didn't demand anything)
The key is don't be entitled. Advisors are overworked. If you missed the window, you need to make it easy for them to help you.
