My professor said there's no rule for how many sentences are in an essay

I asked my comp professor yesterday about how many sentences are in an essay because I wanted a clear answer for once and she just smiled and said "however many it takes to make your argument" and I almost screamed. Like ma'am that is NOT helpful to my anxious brain!!

She went on to explain that good writing is about cohesion and development not counting. She showed us two sample paragraphs—one had eight really short choppy sentences and one had four longer well-developed sentences. The four-sentence paragraph was way better because each sentence built on the last and had actual substance . She said the eight-sentence paragraph felt like a list of ideas while the four-sentence one felt like thinking on paper.

I kinda get it now but also?? I still want a number. My brain likes rules!! She said a typical academic paragraph in college is usually 5-8 sentences but it depends on the assignment and the argument . So I'm going with that as my guideline. 5-8 sentences per paragraph, enough paragraphs to make the argument. That's my new rule and I'm sticking to it until she tells me otherwise.

Anyone else need concrete rules or am I alone in this??

I used to be exactly like you until I took a class where we analyzed paragraph structure in published essays. Game changer.

Here's what I noticed: professional writers don't count sentences. They organize by rhetorical purpose. A paragraph might be:

• 2 sentences to make a sharp point (transition paragraphs)
• 12 sentences to work through a complex argument
• 1 sentence for dramatic effect (rare but powerful)
• 7 sentences because that's what the idea needed

The ONE SENTENCE paragraphs were the most shocking to me. Like, can you DO that?? Apparently yes if it lands right. Joan Didion does it constantly.

So maybe your new rule isn't about sentence count but about completeness. Read your paragraph and ask: does this feel finished? Does it do what it needed to do? Trust your ear more than your calculator.

That said, 5-8 is a perfectly fine training wheels number. Just know that eventually you'll outgrow it.
