Is it better to write the introduction first, or save it for last?

This might sound like a dumb question, but I've been thinking about my writing process and I think it's broken. I always, always start with the introduction. I stare at that blank page until I have the perfect first sentence. The problem? I spend an hour crafting an intro for a paper I haven't even written yet, and half the time, by the time I'm done with the body, the intro doesn't even fit anymore! Then I have to rewrite it anyway.

I have a friend who swears she writes the entire paper, including the conclusion, and then writes the intro. She says it's the only way to know what you're actually introducing. That sounds kinda smart, but also terrifying. What if I get lost without a roadmap?

So I'm putting it to the floor: What's your process? Do you need that intro to guide you, or does it just get in the way? I'm trying to decide which method to force myself to try for my next paper.

I used to be an intro-first person like you, but I switched to last and omg game changer. The amount of times I wrote a banger intro then completely changed my argument halfway through... too many. Now I write a super rough thesis, write the body, then go back and craft the perfect intro that actually matches. Try it once and see!
