I'm a junior at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, and I don't see us mentioned much here. We're a private Christian university, so we're smaller than the big state schools, but that's kind of the point.
Class sizes are tiny. Like, my largest class has 25 people. My smallest had 8. My professors know my name, my major, my plans after graduation. They actually notice if I miss class. That level of accountability is exactly what I needed.
Faith is integrated, not separate. Chapel is a thing, but it's not forced. There's a genuine community of faith here, but also space for questions and doubts. If you want a school where your beliefs are supported but not policed, Carey does that well.
The nursing program is legit. Like, really legit. Carey nursing grads are everywhere in Mississippi hospitals. The new nursing building is beautiful. If you're pre-med or pre-nursing, this is a strong choice.
Hattiesburg is a great college town. We're right there with Southern Miss, so you get the benefits of a college town (restaurants, coffee shops, things to do) without being alone in your little bubble.
It's affordable for a private school. Not cheap, but they work with you on financial aid, and the small classes are worth it.
If you want a faith-based education with real community and small classes, look at Carey. Anyone else a Crusader? (We're working on the mascot thing, but the community is solid.)
