I thought I'd be the oldest in my class. I was wrong

I'm 28. I've been out of school for ten years. I walked into my first class and looked around. I was not the oldest.

There's a woman in my English class who's 55. She's raising her granddaughter. She works at a nursing home. She's taking two classes. She told me: "I'm doing this so she knows we don't give up."

There's a guy in my math class who's 32. He got laid off from the plant. He's been here for two years. He's transferring next fall. He said: "The first semester was the hardest. Then you get used to it."

I didn't know I needed to hear that. That the first semester is hard for everyone. That people older than me are doing it. That I'm not behind. I'm just starting.

I'm still scared. But I'm not alone. 👥

This post humbled me. The woman at 55, the guy at 32 — they're not letting age stop them. Why should I?

Also: "The first semester is the hardest" is so true. I almost dropped out twice. Then I figured out how to study, how to ask for help, how to manage my time. It got easier. Not easy. Easier.

You're not behind, Jackson. You're on your own timeline. That's the only timeline that matters. Keep showing up. You'll get there. 📚
