As a senior about to graduate, I've been reflecting on which types of writing I'll actually need in the real world. Turns out, academic essays are just the beginning.

Here's what I've learned matters most:
  • Professional writing – emails, reports, memos. Clear, concise, and audience-focused
  • Persuasive writing – cover letters, proposals, pitches. You're selling yourself or your ideas
  • Technical writing – documentation, instructions, user guides. Making complex things simple
  • Journalism – reporting facts objectively, whether for a company newsletter or blog
  • Creative writing – marketing copy, social media, storytelling for brands
The biggest surprise was how much professional writing matters. My internship supervisor said most new hires can't write a clear email. Learning to be concise and professional has already helped me stand out .

My advice to underclassmen: don't just focus on essays. Practice different types of writing while you're in school. Take a business writing class, start a blog, volunteer to write for a campus publication. Future you will thank you when you're not struggling to draft your first work email.

Yes! The "professional writing" point hit home. 😅 I had an internship last summer and my first email to a client took me an hour because I was so scared of sounding unprofessional. Meanwhile, my supervisor could dash off perfect emails in minutes. One thing I'd add: learning to adapt your tone is huge. The way you email a professor vs. a boss vs. a coworker is all different. Practicing now saves so much stress later. Thanks for this—saving it!
