Every time Mississippi colleges come up, it's always the same two: Ole Miss and Mississippi State. And yeah, they're great, big schools with all the traditional stuff. But there are other options in this state that deserve some love, especially for students who might not want the "typical" college experience.

I'm a junior at Delta State University in Cleveland, and I feel like no one knows we exist. 😂 So here's my pitch for the "other" Mississippi schools:
  • Delta State: Small classes (like, professors know your name small), really strong programs in aviation, education, and the arts. Cleveland is a tiny town, but it's got charm, and the GRAMMY Museum is literally on campus. If you want a quiet, focused place to learn without the party pressure, it's great.
  • Southern Miss (Hattiesburg): Okay, this one is actually pretty big, but it gets overshadowed by the SEC schools. Hattiesburg is a fun town, and USM has a killer reputation for polymer science and music. The Eagle Armor program (free tuition for some Mississippi residents) is a game-changer.
  • Jackson State: An HBCU with so much history and culture. The Sonic Boom of the South marching band is legendary. JSU has a real sense of community and pride. If you're looking for that HBCU experience, it's top-tier.
  • Millsaps College (Jackson): Small, private, liberal arts. It's expensive, but they give good aid. If you want a more "east coast" small college feel in Mississippi, this is it. Great for pre-law.
My point is, don't sleep on the smaller schools! You get more attention, often more scholarships, and you're not just a number. Anyone else rep a lesser-known Mississippi school? Let's show some pride!

Hey Aaron! Delta State represent! 🙌 I'm in the education program here and honestly can't imagine being at a huge school. My professors actually know when I'm struggling and reach out. I've had coffee with three different profs just to talk about career stuff. You don't get that at a 30,000-student university.

Also the GRAMMY Museum being on campus is so random but so cool. I've interned there and met actual musicians. Cleveland is small but we have some good food spots (Hey Joe's is elite) and the people are genuine.

For anyone reading: if you want a real college experience without the Greek life pressure and 300-person lectures, Delta State is worth a look. We exist! 😂
