Okay, hear me out: If you're a creative person, don't just do freelance writing. Do freelance writing AND something else. 🎨

I'm a Graphic Design major, and I started doing freelance writing because I needed content to put in my designs. Like, I can design a beautiful brochure, but if I don't have words to put in it, it's just empty boxes. So I started writing the words too.

Now I offer a package deal: I write the copy AND design the piece. Clients LOVE this. They don't have to coordinate between a writer and a designer. They get one person who understands both sides. My rates have doubled, and my projects are more interesting because I have creative control over the whole process.

If you have ANY other skill—design, social media, video editing, web development—consider combining it with freelance writing. It makes you so much more valuable.

Some combos that work well:
  • Writing + Design (my combo!)
  • Writing + Social Media Management
  • Writing + SEO Consulting
  • Writing + Photography
  • Writing + Translation (for multilingual folks)
Anyone else here combining freelance writing with another skill? Let's brainstorm! 💡

This is a solid business strategy, no doubt. From a purely practical standpoint, you're increasing your "stickiness" as a freelancer. But I’d add a word of caution: don't let one skill atrophy while you're building the combo. I've seen people try to pair "Writing + Web Development" and end up being mediocre at both. It’s tough to master two crafts. My advice? Get really good at one thing first, then layer on the second as a complementary skill, like Peterson did with design. Otherwise, you might just end up confusing your clients.
