Ghost writing for college applications – ethical or just smart strategy?

Hi everyone! 👋 I'm a high school senior applying to some pretty competitive schools, and my essays are... not great. 😬 My parents offered to hire someone to help me "polish" them, but a friend warned me that's basically ghost writing and it's unethical. I'm so confused!

I'm not asking anyone to write my story FOR me—I have the ideas, I just struggle with structure and making my voice sound mature. Is it considered ghost writing if someone helps you edit heavily? Where's the line between "getting help" and "cheating"?

I want to get into my dream school, but I also want to sleep at night knowing I earned my spot. Any advice from people who've been through this? I'm genuinely trying to do the right thing here.

I'm gonna be the voice of caution here. Even if it's 'just editing,' if you're paying someone to make it sound significantly better, isn't that misrepresenting yourself? 🤔 College is supposed to be about your current ability, not your parents' wallet. If you struggle with writing, maybe focus on schools with holistic reviews or spend that money on a tutor before you apply, not to polish the application itself.
