How do transfer students survive at Ole Miss without dying of loneliness? 😥

I transferred to Ole Miss this semester and I'm struggling hard. Everyone already has their friend groups. I eat lunch alone, I go to games alone (well, surrounded by 60,000 people but alone in the crowd), and I go back to my apartment alone. It's starting to get to me.

I thought coming for football would automatically give me a community. Like, you love the same team, you're instant friends, right? Wrong. Everyone tailgates with their groups they've had since freshman year. I'm just wandering around the Grove with no one to talk to. 🏈😔

A student in an article I read described something similar: "going from a school where it was all people of color, all coming from similar backgrounds, to coming to a campus where everyone's white, it's definitely a transition" . That's not exactly my situation but the feeling is the same: I don't fit in, and everyone can tell.

I saw an article with advice from UM staff experts about helping transfer students acclimate . Jeremy Roberts, a learning specialist, said that "transfer students usually have additional life roles to consider" like working, commuting, family . For me, it's working part-time and figuring out this giant campus where everyone else seems to know where they're going.

Rebekah Reysen from the Center for Student Success said orientation is key for "making connections with staff members and peers" . I went to orientation. It felt fake. Like speed dating for friends. Nothing stuck.

Roberts also said "being willing to try a new approach can make a big difference not only in grades but also in self-confidence" . But what approach? I've tried talking to people in class. I've tried clubs. I've tried sitting with random people at the dining hall. Nothing works.

They listed resources like the Counseling Center, Career Center, and Center for Student Success . Has anyone actually used these and made friends through them? Is there a transfer student group? A "people who also have no friends" group? I just need one person to grab coffee with before I lose my mind.

Please tell me it gets better. 🥲
