I have to write a research paper on a topic I hate. How do I stay motivated?

I'm a political science major, and I love my field—usually. But this semester, my professor assigned specific topics, and I got stuck with 'The History of Agricultural Subsidies in the European Union.' I cannot express how little I care about farm subsidies. I've tried to find an angle that interests me—environmental impact, economic inequality, anything—but my heart just isn't in it.

Every time I open a PDF about the Common Agricultural Policy, I want to fall asleep. The paper is 15 pages long and worth 40% of my grade. How do you force yourself to care about something you find painfully boring? Do you have any tricks for manufacturing enthusiasm, or do I just need to power through with pure grit and caffeine?

Here's the trick: find a controversy or a puzzle within the boring topic. Agricultural subsidies sound dull until you realize they're at the heart of massive debates:

• Trade wars: The EU and US constantly fight over agricultural subsidies at the WTO. That's drama!
• Climate impact: Subsidies often encourage factory farming, which is a huge environmental issue—right up your alley.
• Global inequality: EU subsidies can undercut farmers in developing countries. That's a justice angle.

Your job isn't to love the whole topic—it's to find one piece that connects to what you already care about. You mentioned environmental impact. Run with that. Make the paper about "How EU Farm Subsidies Fuel Climate Change." Suddenly you're an environmental crusader, not a policy drudge.
