As I approach the final 5 credit hours of my PhD coursework, I’m noticing a shift in my motivation—the kind that hovers stubbornly around 27%. While I feel a flicker of guilt about it (a residual echo of my Type-A academic past), the reality is that these remaining classes no longer feel aligned with my goals. Having maintained a 3.96 GPA throughout graduate school, I’ve made peace with the fact that my academic performance here won’t define my candidacy. For the first time in my academic journey, I’m choosing to streamline: opt for efficiency over perfection, prioritize coursework that demands minimal mental bandwidth, and dedicate time to studying for my exams instead of chasing letter grades. Have others navigated this same transition?
