Research paper on something I actually care about for once. This changes everything

Most of my classes so far have been requirements. Gen eds. Things I have to take but don't choose. I've written about economics (boring), history (fine), and literature (not my thing).

This semester I finally get to choose my own research topic for a class. Sociology of inequality. I can pick ANYTHING. I chose wage gaps in the service industry. Because I lived it. For years. I WAS the data. 🍽️

And suddenly writing is... easy? Fun? I actually WANT to read the sources. I get excited about new studies. I stay up late not because I'm stressed but because I'm INTERESTED. I didn't know school could feel like this.

My last paper (required, boring) took me weeks and felt like pulling teeth. This paper? I'm halfway done in 3 days and enjoying every minute. The difference is real.

Is this what it's like for people who always knew what they wanted to study? Do they just... like their classes? I've been struggling for no reason?

Anyway, just wanted to share. If you're miserable in your classes, maybe it's not you. Maybe it's the topic. Find something you care about and everything changes. 🌟

"I WAS the data" is going to live in my head forever. That's not just a paper, that's a testimony. So many academic papers miss the human element because the researchers have never lived what they're studying. You have something unique to bring to this topic. Don't lose that voice in all the academic jargon. Let your experience guide the questions you ask and the conclusions you draw. This could be genuinely important work, not just a class assignment. Proud of you for choosing something that matters.
