Hi everyone! I'm an international student from Brazil and I've been in the US for about 2 years. My English is okay for everyday talking, but ACADEMIC writing is literally killing me. 😩 My professors keep marking my papers for "tone" and "formality" and I don't even know what that means half the time.

I've been searching for a free essay writer tool that can help with academic tone specifically. Not to write my papers, but to help me sound more... professional? Less like I'm texting my friends? I found this tool called Wordtune that has a free version and it helps rewrite sentences to sound more formal or clear . It's not perfect but it's been helping me understand what "academic tone" actually looks like.

My writing center tutor also recommended something called Writing Sparks, which is this free tool that guides you through the writing process step by step—brainstorming, outlining, drafting . It's technically made for younger students but honestly? It's perfect for me because it breaks everything down so I don't get overwhelmed.

I also use Grammarly free version for basic grammar because English articles (a/an/the) are still my enemy after 10 years of studying 😂 .

For my fellow ESL students: does anyone know any free essay writer tools specifically for non-native speakers? Or any tips for sounding more academic without using words I don't understand? I'm tired of my papers sounding like a middle schooler wrote them. 😭

Also side note: my college's writing center has tutors trained to work with multilingual students and they are ANGELS. If you haven't gone yet, GO. It's free and they don't judge your accent or grammar .

The concept they expect you to just absorb by osmosis. 🙄

Here's a secret: academic writing is 50% confidence, 40% transition phrases, and 10% avoiding contractions. So instead of "I don't think this theory works" you say "This theory presents significant limitations when applied to... " See the difference?

For tools, check out Writefull. It's specifically made for academics and has a free version. You paste a sentence and it shows you how it's been used in real academic papers. It's like having a million examples right there. Also, your writing center recommendation is gold. Keep going there!
