Dropped out at 19. Bad choices, bad mental health, bad timing. Worked dead-end jobs for years. Hated it. Saved money. Applied again. Got in. Now I'm 27 and sitting in classes with 19-year-olds who have no idea what I've been through.
And you know what? I'm KILLING it. Straight A's so far. My coursework is always done early. My participation is thoughtful. My professors love me. Not because I'm smarter, but because I actually WANT to be here.
These kids complain about 5-page papers. 5 pages? I've worked 12-hour shifts standing up. I've dealt with customers screaming at me for $0.50. A paper is NOTHING. I'll write 10 pages and be grateful I'm sitting in a chair with air conditioning.
The weird part is feeling invisible sometimes. I don't fit in. I don't go to parties. I don't live in the dorms. I have a tiny apartment and a cat and I go to bed at 10 PM. I'm basically a grandma with a textbook.
But I also don't care. I'm here for me. For my future. For the life I want to build. Let them have their fun. I'll have my degree and my career and my peace.
Any other "non-traditional" students out there? How's your experience been?
