Hey Mississippi fam! I just accepted a full-time position before graduation, and I had to come back to this forum to share how I did it. A year ago, I was the one posting frantically about how to find a job as a mississippi student, feeling like everyone else had connections I didn't. Now? I'm proof that our state has SO many resources if you know where to look!
First – and I can't stress this enough – USE YOUR COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY CAREER SERVICES. I'm at Southern Miss, and Career Services changed my life . I booked a one-on-one appointment on Microsoft Teams (super easy!), and my advisor helped me polish my resume and actually showed me how to use Handshake properly. I had no idea you could set up job alerts so opportunities come straight to your inbox!
Second – WIN Job Centers are FREE and SO helpful. I walked into the Meridian location with my ID, and they connected me with training resources I didn't even know existed . If you qualify for WIOA funding, they can help pay for certifications that make you more hireable . I had a friend who got his electrical lineman certification through this route and now has an amazing career !
Third – network LOCAL. I know it sounds scary, but Mississippi people are friendly! I followed local businesses on LinkedIn, sent a few polite messages asking for informational interviews, and two people actually said yes. One of those conversations led to my current job. People here WANT to help students succeed.
Fourth – check Mississippi-specific job boards. Mississippi Grad Jobs through Career Services has postings specifically for Mississippi employers . Don't just stick to national sites!
Y'all, we've got this. Mississippi is full of opportunity – sometimes you just need to know where to dig. Feel free to message me with questions! So excited for all of us!
