I used ChatGPT to help me write an essay and now I feel like a fraud. Discussion?

Okay, I need to have an honest discussion about AI. I had a 5-page essay due on a topic I understood, but I was struggling with the introduction and the conclusion. I asked ChatGPT to generate a few different opening paragraphs just to see different approaches. I didn't copy them, but I used the structure of one and rewrote it in my own words. Is that cheating? I feel dirty, like I took a shortcut even though the final words were mine. But also, isn't that just using a tool, like a thesaurus or a grammar checker? Where is the line now? I'm genuinely conflicted and I want to know how other students are navigating this new reality. Are you using AI, and if so, how do you justify it to yourself?

AI for brainstorming and structure? Fine. AI for writing? Not fine.

What you described—getting ideas for an intro, then rewriting in your own words—is basically what we used to do with Google searches or sample essays. You're using AI as a thinking partner, not a replacement.

The guilt comes from the newness. We haven't collectively decided where the line is yet. But if the final words are YOURS and the ideas are YOURS, you haven't cheated. You've just used a tool to get unstuck.
