Is there a free New York Times subscription for students? Yes, and it's incredible

I was about to pay for a New York Times subscription when a friend stopped me: "Don't buy it — Ole Miss gives it to us for free." I didn't believe her. She was right.

Every Ole Miss student gets free access to the New York Times . All you need is your university email .

Here's what you actually get:

• Every article, no paywalls
• All the games (Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee)
• Recipes, reviews, podcasts
• The entire NYT archive

The membership lasts until you graduate . After that, you're on your own — but four years of free NYT is huge.

I've been reading articles I would never have paid for, and honestly, it's made me more informed in class discussions. My poli sci professor even mentioned that students who read the Times regularly tend to write better essays .

How to activate it:

1. Go to the NYT website
2. Create an account using your olemiss.edu email (not the go.olemiss.edu one)
3. Claim your digital pass
4. Download the app and log in

That's it. Completely free.

This is just one of many free resources Ole Miss offers. The library also has Kanopy — a movie streaming platform with amazing films like "Parasite" and "Lady Bird" — completely free for students .

And if you hit a paywall on a scholarly article? Don't pay. Use the library's One Search or request it through Interlibrary Loan. Library staff can usually find the article in one or two days, free of charge .

I'm making it my mission to tell every freshman about these resources. We're paying so much in tuition and fees — we should use everything they offer.
