Hey y'all (trying to get in the spirit 😂). I'm a high school senior from Illinois, and I'm seriously considering two schools in Mississippi: Ole Miss and Mississippi State. I've done the virtual tours, I've read the websites, but I need the real, unfiltered student perspective.

I'm planning to major in business (maybe marketing), and both schools seem to have good programs. But I want to know about the vibes. What's the actual difference in student life?

From what I can gather online:
  • Ole Miss (Oxford): Seems like the "classic" southern college experience. Beautiful campus, strong Greek life, football is a huge deal. Oxford looks like a really cool town. But I'm a little intimidated by the Greek scene—is it possible to have a social life without rushing?
  • Mississippi State (Starkville): Seems more STEM/ag focused, but I've heard the business school is solid. People say it's more "down to earth" and friendly. Is Starkville more of a college town than Oxford, or just smaller?
I'm also a little worried about being an outsider. Is it easy to make friends if you're not from Mississippi? Do people stick to their high school cliques, or are they open to meeting new people?

Also, how bad are the summers really? I've heard horror stories about the humidity. 🥵

Any advice, pros/cons, or just general vibes would be super helpful. I need to make a decision in the next few months!

Freshman year is hard for out-of-staters anywhere. Everyone else seems to know each other from high school. But here's the thing—at MSU, they have programs specifically for this. The "Find Your People" campaign, Freshman Year Navigators, 300+ student orgs . You just have to put yourself out there. Join something. Anything.

I joined the club fishing team (lol) and suddenly had 20 friends.

The business school is good. We have the same accreditation as Ole Miss. Starkville is smaller than Oxford but honestly? Cheaper. My rent is $450. My friends at Ole Miss pay $800+.

The "country" reputation is real but overstated. Yes, there are trucks with mud tires. There are also plenty of normal people. You'll find your crowd.
