I'm a junior at University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, and I feel like we're the state's best-kept secret. Everyone flocks to Ole Miss or State, but USM has its own thing going on, and it's pretty great.
The campus is beautiful. It's not as "classic southern" as Oxford, but it's green, walkable, and has this mix of old and new buildings. The Century Park area is legit nice to hang out in.
Hattiesburg is the perfect size. Big enough to have stuff to do (restaurants, bars, a little downtown), small enough that it doesn't feel overwhelming. It's also halfway between New Orleans and the Coast, so weekend trips are easy.
Our polymer science program is world-class. Like, actually top-tier. If you're into chemistry or materials science, this is the place. The marine science program (with the Gulf Coast location) is also strong.
The school spirit is real but not crazy. Football games are fun, the "Pride of Mississippi" marching band is amazing, and the "Southern Miss to the Top" fight song lives in my head rent-free. But it's not the whole identity of the school.
The cost is reasonable. Way more affordable than the private options.
If you want a solid education, a fun but not overwhelming college town, and a school that's big enough to have options but small enough to feel connected, check out Southern Miss.
Any other Golden Eagles in here? SMTTT!
