What I learned about community college transfers from Holmes reviews

I've been reading student reviews of Holmes Community College to figure out if it's the right start for my transfer plan. Here's what I'm piecing together.

The academics: Reviews say the professors are “helpful” and “accessible” . One student wrote: “Small classes. My anatomy professor knew my name and checked in when I was struggling.” This is exactly what I want before transferring to a bigger school.

The advising: This is the critical piece. Some reviews say advisors are “knowledgeable about transfer requirements” . Others say: “You have to be your own advocate. Don't assume they'll tell you everything.” The consensus: come prepared with questions.

The social life: Multiple reviews mention that the Ridgeland campus is “quiet” and “mostly commuters” . The Goodman campus has more student activities. One student said: “If you want the college experience, go to Goodman. If you just want classes, go to Ridgeland.”

My plan: I'll start at Goodman for the community. I'll meet with an advisor early and get my transfer plan in writing. I'm not expecting a four-year experience, but I want a solid start.

Goodman is definitely the move if you want any kind of social scene. Ridgeland is basically a parking lot with classrooms attached lol. I did two years at Ridgeland and honestly it was fine because I just wanted in and out, but if you're looking for study groups and actually meeting people, yeah Goodman's the call. The anatomy prof thing tracks too—small classes are underrated. I had a bio prof who literally wrote me a recommendation letter that got me into Ole Miss.
